Tail lesions in C3H/He mice

Abstract: C3H/He mice obtained from different suppliers developed tail lesions shortly after arrival. Histologically no inclusion bodies could be shown. A serological survey of diseased mice was negative for those viruses which may cause skin lesions. The disease could not be transmitted to healthy mice and no virus could be cultured from the skin lesions. It is concluded that the syndrome was induced by stress, in this case transport from the United Kingdom to the Netherlands.

“…2). The specific combination of histopathological changes observed in the BhϪ͞Ϫ tail, namely ballooning degeneration of the upper stratum spinosum and pallor, together with typical markers of rodent ringtail such as hyperkeratosic parakeratosis, neutrophilic infiltrate, and necrosis, have not been reported previously (26,33). Instead, this unique combination of histomorphological features in BhϪ͞Ϫ tail lesions was similar to descriptions of human skin lesions associated with pellagra, necrolytic migratory erythema (glucagonoma), and acrodermatitis enteropathica (34).…”

“…Here we present the prevalence rates found by use of a screening programme according to the recommendations of FELASA during the period 2000-2003 and compare them with the results of earlier studies from 1981-1984(van der Logt 1986-1993(van der Logt 1996 and rates recently described in other studies (Gilioli et al 1996, Zenner & Regnault 2000, Livingstone & Riley 2003.…”

“…Table 1 shows the serological screening programme of the International Council of Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) reference centre for rodent viruses in Nijmegen on which the data from the 2000-2003 period are based. ELISA was performed as described previously (Koopman et al 1984) using a single serum dilution (1 in 50). Specification of the antigens used for the detection of sialodacryoadenitis/rat coronavirus (SDA/RCV), ectromelia virus, mouse rotavirus (EDIM) and adenovirus have been described by van der Logt (1996).…”
