Taguchi- Grey Relation Based Multi-Response Optimization of Diesel Engine Operating Parameters with Water-in-Diesel Emulsion Fuel

Abstract: The use of water-in-diesel (W/D) emulsion fuel has the potential to promote better performance with lower emissions in existing diesel engines. The present study aims to analyzes the influence of operating parameters on the overall engine performance and emission characteristics using W/D emulsion fuel and to obtain the optimum level for favorable performance and emission levels. The engine operating parameters were optimized using a Taguchi-grey relation based multi-response optimization tool. Two controlling… Show more

“…In addition, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, sulfur oxides, and soot are the main pollutants emitted by engines operating on diesel fuel, particularly in urban areas with high population density. Such pollutants have a tendency to aggravate environmental problems such as acid rain, climate change, global warming, and smoke and have a detrimental impact on human health (Reşitoğlu et al, 2015;Ibrahim et al, 2016;Alhamdany et al, 2018;Vellaiyan et al, 2018;Hamid et al, 2020). Because of the fast depletion of fossil fuels and growing concern for the climate and human health, both engine manufacturers and researchers are being forced to look for alternatives that are reliable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly.…”

“…The changes in the physicochemical properties and exhaust emission parameters of the blends composed of different feedstock biodiesel and diesel fuel were compared in many works (264,265). The higher oxygen level of biodiesel compare to fossil fuel leads to complete combustion of the fuel in a diesel engine and results in lower UHC and CO, and PM emission (266). The addition of the limited concentration of water to biodiesel causes a micro-explosion phenomenon and stimulates a more combustible air-fuel mixture, which was reported as a method of the NO x and PM emissions reduction (267).…”
