Systemic Review of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi): Morphological Characteristics, Phytoconstituents and Therapeutic Applications

Abstract: Plants have been used medicinally by humans for millennia. Tulsi is one of these drugs. A plant's perfume emanates from within. It is found all over India. It is harvested around Hindu temples or places of worship. Its leaves, seeds, and roots are employed in Ayurvedic treatment. Tulsi contains a variety of nutrients and bioactive compounds. Tulsi's key chemical components are Linalool, caryophyllyne, Oleanolic acid, and Rosmalinic acid. Tulsi standardisation has been used in modern science. Two active ingredi… Show more

“…Oral administration of 200 and 400 mg/kg of an ethanolic and an aqueous extract of the root of B. variegate protected rats with pylorus-ligation, ethanol, and aspirin-induced stomach ulcers. The extract markedly decreased basal gastric acid output and protected gastric mucosa [32].…”

“…Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder are all closely related to insomnia. [8][9][10][11][12] RLS, persistent pain, GERD, respiratory issues, and inactivity are all medical disorders that raise the risk of developing chronic insomnia. Problems with development can be linked to a child's susceptibility to developing sleep disorders.…”

“…Nowadays, getting a decent night's sleep is regarded as essential for cardiovascular health [9]. Patients with persistent insomnia are more likely to have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arterial hypertension, depression, anxiety, and decreased cognitive function [8,10,11,12]. As a result, chronic insomnia has a high financial impact on both individuals and healthcare systems [2,13].…”

“…In order to propel the contents of the perivascular space forward, the perivascular pump mechanism relies on systolic arterial pressure waves propagating through the vessels [95]. Ethmoidal arteries, which originate in the ophthalmic and internal carotid arteries, provide an abundant blood supply to the nose [8]. Substances can enter the central nervous system via the perivascular areas surrounding these arteries [5,11].Studies comparing intranasal and arterial administration in animals have shown that substances administered in the former route enter the cerebral perivascular spaces within 20 minutes [16], are found in greater concentrations in the dura mater and circle of Willis [17], and are found in greater concentrations in the deep and superficial cervical nodes of rats [95], indicating that they may be transported via lymphatic drainage from the nasal passages and CSF.…”

“…Class II medications are poorly soluble in water but highly permeable at therapeutic levels, while class IV pharmaceuticals are poorly soluble in water and poorly permeable. This can reduce the drug's bioavailability and delay the beginning of its effects [8,9]. It can also reduce the drug's solubility, absorption rate, and extension.…”
