Systemic immune-inflammation index in germ-cell tumours

Abstract: High SII was associated with poor outcome in GCTs. Combination of PD-L1 positive TILs and SII could further refine prognosis in GCTs.

“…Neutrophils might not only help promoting inflammatory biomarkers including vascular endothelial growth factor which accelerate cancer progression and metastasis, but also protect tumor from immune surveillance (Mantovani, Cassatella, Costantini, & Jaillon, 2011 Rodriguez, & Ruiz, 2012;Liao et al, 2015). Previous research has suggested the prognostic value of SII in patients undergoing immunotherapy (Chovanec et al, 2018). Accordingly, the SII might act as a prognostic biomarker during immunotherapy.…”

“…Systemic immune‐inflammation index has been well‐known as an independent predictor of recurrence or metastasis of cancers . It was reported that neutrophils could enhance the invasion, proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells and furthermore, platelets could interact with cancer cells and facilitate cancer cell survival and metastasis .…”

“…Systemic immune-inflammation index has been wellknown as an independent predictor of recurrence or metastasis of cancers. [5][6][7][8] It was reported that neutrophils could enhance the invasion, proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells and furthermore, platelets could interact with cancer cells and facilitate cancer cell survival and metastasis. 5 Thus, at the time of diagnosis or just prior to operation, SII may predict the aggressive entity of cancer cells, such as recurrence or metastasis in the future.…”

“…NLR and SII were both independent predictors in a multivariable model of overall survival (OS) when tested separately against the IGCCCG risk classification. Chovanec et al (2018) performed an interesting analysis, whereby they combined SII and the prognostic significance of PD-L1 expression on tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). These two measurements reflect different aspects of the immune environment; PD-L1's expression on TILs provides an insight into the tumour microenvironment, and SII indicates a global inflammatory status.…”
