Systemic Homologous Neutralizing Antibodies Are Inadequate for the Evaluation of Vaccine Protective Efficacy against Coinfection by High Virulent PEDV and PRRSV

Abstract: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) coinfection occurs commonly and can synergistically reduce feed intake and pig growth. Vaccination is an effective strategy utilized for PED and PRRS control, and systemic homologous neutralizing antibodies (shnAbs) in serum are commonly used for protective efficacy evaluation of PED and PRRS vaccines.

“…Te data of viremia, antibody level, rectal temperature, and body weight in this study were shown as means ± standard deviations (SD). Te diferences between groups were determined by a Mann−Whitney U test using Graphpad Prism 8 XML project [40]. A p value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically signifcant.…”

“…In recent years, PEDV has emerged as one of the most lethal and infectious pathogens in pigs, and it has caused significant economic losses on the global pig industry. Biosecurity, vaccination, and feedback are basic approaches to managing the disease, but these approaches are not effective at eradicating the spread of PEDV ( 19 21 ). At present, there is still a degree of challenge for the isolation of PEDVs.…”

“…The rectal temperature, weight gain, viremia, and antibody titre are presented as the means ± standard deviations (SDs). The Mann‒Whitney U test in the GraphPad Prism 8 XML project was used for differential analyses among groups [ 8 , 39 ]. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.…”
