Systematizing the theoretical virtues

Abstract: There are at least twelve major virtues of good theories: evidential accuracy, causal adequacy, explanatory depth, internal consistency, internal coherence, universal coherence, beauty, simplicity, unification, durability, fruitfulness, and applicability. These virtues are best classified into four classes: evidential, coherential, aesthetic, and diachronic. Each virtue class contains at least three virtues that sequentially follow a repeating pattern of progressive disclosure and expansion. Systematizing the … Show more

“…This adds to the considerable body of work on RDT, and enhances the consilience of the theory (Thagard ). Consilience, which captures the ability of a theory to explain a variety of phenomena, is a primary criterion with which to evaluate the virtue of a theory (Laudan ; Keas ). Our work further contributes to the use of RDT in SCM research, as we focus on the development of a firm's legitimacy as a primary outcome of interorganizational relationships.…”

“…Rather, the more appropriate question for reviewers and editors to ask is “how strong a case can the authors make that their theory is indeed a good candidate explanation for the empirical findings?” Fortunately, philosophers of science have devised techniques for answering this question that focus on comparing the theoretical virtues of alternative theories. A theory's theoretical virtues include (1) the ability to explain a wider array of empirical findings than rival theories; (2) consistency with accepted background knowledge; (3) realism of underlying assumptions; (4) ability to resolve long‐standing empirical anomalies; (5) generation of new predictions; and (6) simplicity (Laudan ; Thagard ; Lipton ; Keas ). Thus, it is incumbent on authors to argue why their theory offers the best explanation for their findings.…”

Furthermore, our information processing explanation strictly adheres to criteria utilized to evaluate a theory's virtues (Keas ) in that it can explain a variety of findings (Laudan ), it is parsimonious (Thagard ), and aligns with accepted background knowledge (Lipton ).…”

“…This approach has precedent in the broader SCM literature, with Gardner et al (2015) and Tenhi€ al€ a et al (2018) providing two of the more recent examples. Furthermore, our information processing explanation strictly adheres to criteria utilized to evaluate a theory's virtues (Keas 2018) in that it can explain a variety of findings (Laudan 1977), it is parsimonious (Thagard 1978), and aligns with accepted background knowledge (Lipton 2004). 14 Southeastern Freight Lines, another LTL-predominant carrier, notes on its website that it will only offer TL quotes "to fill unbalanced empty lanes in our LTL network" and brokers all other TL shipments out through eShipping Exchange (Southeastern Freight Lines 2018).…”
