Systematics, taxonomy and floristics of Brazilian Rubiaceae: an overview about the current status and future challenges

Abstract: The Rubiaceae is the fourth Angiosperm family in number of species in the World and in the Neotropics. Its overwhelming diversity and presence in most biomes, and at most vegetation layers, makes this family one of the most important components of tropical vegetation. During the last two decades, family classification went through several reorganizations, mostly influenced by the advent of molecular phylogenetic studies, and many taxonomic revisions and floristic studies on Brazilian Rubiaceae have become avai… Show more

“…Rubiaceae é a quarta família de angiospermas mais representativa em número de espécies [1]. Apresenta aproximadamente 550 gêneros e 9000 espécies, sendo que no Brasil ocorrem cerca de 120 gêneros e 1400 espécies, representando uma das principais famílias da flora brasileira normalmente bem representada em quase todas as formações naturais [2].…”

“…Among the species of plants with potential medicinal property are several members of the family Rubiaceae, due to the large number of substances with potential biological activity, including compounds belonging to different chemical classes, such as alkaloids and anthraquinones (Chan-Blanco et al 2006, Delprete andJardim 2012). This family is constituted by the subfamilies Ixoroideae, Rubioideae, Cinchonoideae Raf.…”

“…In South America, there are 30 % of all species of the Rubiaceae family, which exceeds in number of species, all regions of the Earth, being then in South Asia and Africa. In Brazil, Rubiaceae family is represented by about 2,000 species distributed among 110 genera (Delprete and Jardim 2012). In the most important Brazilian ecosystems such as the Amazon and Cerrado regions and Atlantic Forest, species of this family are the form of trees, shrubs, subshrubs or perennial or annual herbs, and lianas and epiphytes.…”
