A new species of Hisonotus is described from the headwaters of the rio Xingu. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having a functional V-shaped spinelet, odontodes not forming longitudinal aligned rows on the head and trunk, lower counts of the lateral and median series of abdominal figs, presence of a single rostral fig at the tip of the snout, absence of the unpaired figlets at typical adipose fin position, yellowish-tipped teeth, absence of conspicuous dark saddles and stripe on the body and higher number of teeth on the premaxillary and dentary. The new species, Hisonotus acuen, is restricted to headwaters of the rio Xingu basin, and is the first species of the genus Hisonotus described from the rio Xingu basin. Hisonotus acuen is highly variable in aspects of external body proportions, including body depth, snout length, and abdomen length. This variation is partly distributed within and among populations, and is not strongly correlated with body size. PCA of 83 adult specimens from six allopatric populations indicates the presence of continuous variation. Therefore, the available morphological data suggest that the individuals inhabiting the six localities of rio Xingu represent different populations of a single species. Low intraspecific variation in mitochondrial Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) provides corroborative evidence.

An appraisal of the phylogenetic relationships of Hypoptopomatini cascudinhos with description of two new genera and three new species (Siluriformes: Loricariidae)

The discovery of three new taxa of Hypoptotopomatini with ambiguous generic assignment prompted a reanalysis of the phylogenetic relationships of the tribe. The analysis focused on a data matrix of 56 terminals and 107 morphological characters comprising the three new taxa, most species of Hypoptopoma and Otocinclus, and all other species of the tribe. The 162 maximally parsimonious trees of 382 steps, consistency index of 0.41, and retention index of 0.83 were then summarized in a strict consensus tree. The results confirm the monophyly of the Hypoptopomatini, recover four genera as monophyletic (Acestridium, Hypoptopoma, Niobichthys, and Otocinclus), revealed Hypoptopoma and Oxyropsis to be non-monophyletic; and revealed two new genera within Hypoptopomatini. Additionally, Otocinclus was found to be sister to a group with all remaining genera of the tribe; Acestridium and Niobichthys were found to be sister to each other and that clade sister to a group formed by ((Leptotocinclus + Hypoptopoma [part]) + (Nannoxyropsis (Oxyropsis + Hypoptopoma [part]))). Based on this framework, changes to the classification and the taxonomy of the Hypoptopomatini are suggested and the new taxa are described.Keywords: Hypoptopomatinae, Morphology, New genera, Systematics, Taxonomy.A descoberta de três novos táxons pertencentes à Hypoptopomatini com designações genéricas incertas, levaram a uma nova análise das relações filogenéticas da tribo. A análise focou em uma matriz de dados formada por 56 terminais e 107 caracteres morfológicos incluindo os três novos táxons, a maioria das espécies de Hypoptopoma e Otocinclus, e todas as demais espécies da tribo. As 162 árvores maximamente parcimoniosas com 382 passos, índice de consistência 0.41 e índice de retenção 0.83 foram sumarizadas em um consenso estrito. O resultado obtido corrobora o monofiletismo de Hypoptopomatini, recupera quatro gêneros como grupos monofiléticos (Acestridium, Hypoptopoma, Niobichthys, e Otocinclus), aponta Hypoptopoma e Oxyropsis como grupos não-monofiléticos e revela dois novos gêneros pertencentes à Hypoptopomatini. Adicionalmente, Otocinclus foi encontrado como sendo grupo-irmão de um clado formado por todos os demais gêneros da tribo e Acestridium e Niobichthys formam um grupo-irmão mais relacionado a um clado formado por dois grupos monofiléticos ((Leptotocinclus + Hypoptopoma [parte]) + (Nannoxyropsis (Oxyropsis + Hypoptopoma [parte]))). Com base neste cenário, sugere-se mudanças na classificação e na taxonomia de Hypoptopomatini e os novos táxons são descritos.

A new species of armored catfish Parotocinclus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Parnaíba basin, northeastern, Brazil

Recent taxonomic studies indicated the presence of several undescribed species in the rio Parnaíba basin. Among those, a new species of Parotocinclus endemic of this drainage is herein described. It differs from most of its congeners, including the sympatric P. haroldoi and P. cearensis, by a vestigial or rudimentary adipose fin (vs. conspicuous adipose fin). This character is also present in P. bidentatus and P. muriaensis (both from the rio Paraíba do Sul basin, southeastern Brazil), P. spilurus (rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil), P. seridoensis (rio Piranhas-Açu basin, northeastern Brazil), P. halbothi (rios Trombetas and Marowijne basins, northern Brazil and Suriname) and P. dani (from rio Tapajós in Mato Grosso State, Brazil). The new species differs from these latter species mainly by the abdomen extensively covered by broad dermal plates. It also differs from P. haroldoi and P. cearensis by light bands between the snout tip and the nostrils.Keywords: Caatinga and Cerrado ichthyofauna, Hypoptopomatinae, Maranhão-Piauí ecoregion, Taxonomy.Estudos taxonômicos recentes indicaram a presença de várias espécies não descritas na bacia do rio Parnaíba. Dentre estas, uma nova espécie de Parotocinclus endêmica desta drenagem é aqui descrita. Ela difere da maioria dos seus congêneres, incluindo as simpátricas P. haroldoi e P. cearensis, por apresentar nadadeira adiposa vestigial ou rudimentar (vs. nadadeira adiposa desenvolvida). Este caráter também está presente em P. bidentatus e P. muriaensis (ambos do rio Paraíba do Sul, sudeste do Brasil), P. spilurus (bacia do rio Jaguaribe, nordeste do Brasil), P. seridoensis (bacia do rio Piranhas-Açu, nordeste do Brasil), P. halbothi (bacias dos rios Trombetas e Marowijne, norte do Brasil e no Suriname) e P. dani (do rio Tapajós no Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil). A nova espécie difere destas principalmente pelo abdômen extensivamente coberto por placas dérmicas largas. Também difere de P. haroldoi e P. cearensis pela presença de faixas claras entre a ponta do focinho e as narinas.
