Systematic review of occupational hazards at postharvest grain operations

Abstract: IntroductionAgriculture stands out in relation to the high number of occupational incidents and diseases. In this sense, grains postharvest operations, such as receiving, precleaning, drying, storage and shipping the grains, are highlighted in the number of injuries and fatalities.AimTo identify and extract qualitative and quantitative data related to the main occupational hazards present in grains postharvest operations at preprocessing and storage facilities.MethodsA systematic review was carried out in the … Show more

“…Before the grains are stored in the silos, the product goes through the processing phase, which consists in the removal of excess moisture and impurities, followed by the grains being weighed and unloaded. For these steps, the storage units (Figure 2A) have cleaning machines and grain dryers (Gresele, 2020;Bellochio & Coradi, 2022). The stages that the product goes through before being stored can be classified as receiving, cleaning, and drying.…”

“…There are few studies related to occupational hazards developed in post-harvest activities in pre-processing and grain storage units. Thus, such studies are recent in identifying the causes of occupational incidents in this line of work (Geng & Dee, 2018;Kakhki et al, 2019;Chen et al, 2020;Bellochio & Coradi, 2022).…”

“…A popular method of grain storage is outdoor, with a full filling of the barn space; grain cargo transportation is conducted by belt conveyors 150-200 m long, which are used for automatic loading and unloading. Bellochio and Coradi report that for a long time, grain raw materials are subject to storage in specially equipped granaries and elevators and compliance with grain quality indicators at the level of all producers: farmers, agricultural firms, united associations, industrial grain combines [20]. Kholy and Kamel describe the condition of grain warehouses in conformity with their purpose, dividing them into purchasing, transhipment, production, and basic [21].…”
