Purpose The current evaluation standards in German higher education institutions (HEIs) do not often lead to measurable quality improvement. The purpose of this paper is to critically evaluate whether Kaizen can improve the quality of teaching. The presented concept illustrates the evaluation of each course unit to continuously encourage quality feedback from the learners and intensify the exchange with lecturers. Design/methodology/approach Action research is used to combine the continuous improvement philosophy of Kaizen with student course evaluations. A pilot study of the concept provides data from four course cycles to analyze learnings and setbacks. Findings Learners in the pilot courses welcomed the intense participation and allowed improvements to elements such as course concept, course material, presentation style and content or detail selection. The participation rate declined during each term and was highly influenced by triggers like exam and grade relevance. Kaizen could successfully improve course quality, especially in the first two years of newly developed courses. Research limitations/implications The presented results have been collected from one course over four years in one institution. The next stage of research would be the application of the approach in other institutions to validate results and make potential adjustments to the concept, for example, toward continuous learning. Originality/value Although course evaluation has become standard in German HEIs, most institutions only implement it once per term or year. This paper discusses a new approach to expedite the evaluation of teaching quality at the point of action (Gemba) to facilitate the short-term reactions of lecturers.

Higher education is a key element of prosperous communities, and the quality of education should be a priority in attracting prospective students. Good education implies good academic staff, well-equipped laboratories, facilities, and efficient processes. Maintain efficient processes is challenging abut achievable. One of the possible solutions to improve education processes is to pursue a lean strategy in order to reduce waste and non-value-added activities. The purpose of this paper is to combine paying off strategies from manufacturing companies with higher education institutions (HEI), in order to enhance the quality of education and efficiency of higher education institutions. This research deals with application lean tools in university processes with the aim of investigating the possibility of applying lean concepts in HEI. Processes from the student affairs office from a Bosnian university were taken as a case study. The tools were used for data collections, student satisfaction measurement, process efficiency analysis and assessment whether the university is ready for the implementation of the lean concept. As a result, it was observed that communication channels between university and students are weak, the student information system does not respond to students' needs, internal communication channels need to be improved and human resources are underused. Overall, it was found that the lean strategy can be applied in HEIs but for the successful implementation of lean thinking, lifestyle from top management to lower management must be adopted.

RESUMENLas metodologías de Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma y Lean Six Sigma (LSS) han sido ampliamente implementadas en diversos ámbitos, escenarios e industrias; las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) no han sido la excepción; sin embargo, su implementación ha tenido y tiene barreras por superar. El propósito de este artículo es presentar un análisis de diversos escritos de estudio de casos en los que se ha implementado Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing o su integración LSS en IES y de artículos conceptuales con el fin de examinar la manera en que se han aplicado estas metodologías en IES, sus motivaciones y principios necesarios requeridos para una efectiva implementación. La revisión muestra que se han efectuado diversos proyectos de mejora con estas metodologías en procesos académicos, de currículo, de servicios y administrativos. Se encontró que entre los motivadores más importantes que tienen las IES para implementar estas metodologías se encuentran, entre los más relevantes: reducir costos de la gestión de calidad educativa, mejorar el sistema de calidad y acreditación de la institución educativa, responder a la alta competencia, mejorar eficiencia y efectividad en los procesos académicos y administrativos, incrementar la satisfacción de partes interesadas y responder a la reducción de presupuestos en las IES. La implementación de LSS es factible siempre y cuando se instauren principios como el liderazgo, visión, cultura de cambio, entrenamiento, adecuada selección de proyectos, medición de los procesos para toma de decisiones y compromiso de la alta dirección. ABSTRACTThe methodologies of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) have been widely implemented in different industries, and higher education institutions (HEIs) have not been the exception; however, its implementation has had barriers to overcome.
