Systematic review of institutional innovation literature: towards a multi-level management model

Abstract: Institutional innovation creates smart institutions that idiosyncratically thrive in a world of exponential change. Through policy-driven interventions and experiential learning, managers of institutions become adept at delivering praxis- and crisis-driven innovations required for survival and success. Similarly, the management of institutional innovation remains an interest in research due to links of this form of innovation to economic growth, and the demands of on-going major socioeconomic transformations d… Show more

“…Innovation is usually associated with economic growth and is crucial for companies' development of new markets and products (Park, 2021). Therefore, the existing links between innovation and economic growth explain the number of research focusing on this dimension (AlMalki & Durugbo, 2022). Logically, the articles studying COVID‐19 effects and consequences in strategy journals stress out that the appearance of the pandemic and the necessity to deal with its aftermath have been at the origin of a rise in the number of innovations (Lorange, 2021).…”

“…Innovation is essential and necessary for companies' growth in such troubled times (Marshall et al, 2021), and technological innovation can contribute to social crisis management (Xiong et al, 2021). The topic of innovation is presented as a global solution to the challenges created by the pandemic from different perspectives: small and medium‐sized enterprises (Lukito‐Budi et al, 2022; Thukral, 2021); multinational companies (Bathelt & Li, 2022); institutional level (AlMalki & Durugbo, 2022). Some works focus on the problems and obstacles that can underlie sources of innovation and jeopardize business models (Braun et al, 2020).…”

“…Finally, descriptions of institutional innovation have primarily emphasized field-level practices, which have been criticized for disregarding its multi-level interaction nature. 13 , 14 To fill this theoretical gap and illuminate the institutional innovation practice in the healthcare sector, this study discovers how field-level effect of institutional change pressures on the network level of government-industry interaction induced institutional innovation, and organizational-level hospital performance. Therefore, theoretically, we must develop a multi-level institutional innovation model for hospitals to understand the determinants, capability, and process of institutional innovation by integrating the knowledge-based view and institutional theory.…”
