Cognitive culture theory and the associated methods of cultural domain analysis and cultural consensus analysis have revolutionized the study of cultural sharing and variation. However, the ways in which these methods can be employed are still not widely appreciated. Our aim in this paper is to propose a systematic framework for investigating cultural models. We provide examples of ideal types of sharing and variation in cultural models, including monocentric cultural models, multifocal cultural models, and multicentric cultural models. This review will contribute to mixed methods by providing a roadmap for researchers interested in employing cultural modeling in their own work, but who may not have a well‐developed sense of the various ways in which it can be pursued.

In recent years, there has been a florescence of cross-cultural research using ethnographic and qualitative data. This cutting-edge work confronts a range of significant methodological challenges, but has not yet addressed how thematic analysis can be modified for use in cross-cultural ethnography. Thematic analysis is widely used in qualitative and mixed-methods research, yet is not currently well-adapted to cross-cultural ethnographic designs. We build on existing thematic analysis techniques to discuss a method to inductively identify metathemes (defined here as themes that occur across cultures). Identifying metathemes in cross-cultural research is important because metathemes enable researchers to use systematic comparisons to identify significant patterns in cross-cultural datasets and to describe those patterns in rich, contextually-specific ways. We demonstrate this method with data from a collaborative cross-cultural ethnographic research project (exploring weight-related stigma) that used the same sampling frame, interview protocol, and analytic process in four cross-cultural research sites in Samoa, Paraguay, Japan, and the United States. Detecting metathemes that transcend data collected in different languages, cultures, and sites, we discuss the benefits and challenges of qualitative metatheme analysis.

The recent moral and ethical turn in anthropology and psychology has generated renewed interest in whether normative models of morality and ethics are primarily found in forms of social discourse or in cognitive cultural models (or both) and whether these models are structured is culturally specific ways or by universal conceptual structures. This study uses cultural consensus theory (CCT) to provide useful insights into both questions. The study uses free list and successive pile-sort data collected in the islands of Chuuk Lagoon located in the western Pacific islands of Micronesia. It finds that there is a shared cognitive cultural model for the domain of moral comportment in Chuuk. Based on both a cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling of the estimated shared model, aspects of this model do reflect conceptual universals, specifically the five moral foundations identified in Jonathan Haidt's moral foundations theory and Tomasello's theory of the human ontogeny of morality. However, given that Chuuk is a cultural setting that emphasizes what Richard Shweder called the ethic of community culturally and institutionally, as opposed to either an ethic of autonomy or divinity, the most salient aspects of the model do reflect this local cultural emphasis.
