Synthetic self-assembled homogeneous network hydrogels with high mechanical and recoverable properties for tissue replacement

Abstract: Development of hydrogels with highly mechanical and recoverable properties under physiological conditions is of great importance for broadening and improving their potential applications in load-bearing artificial soft tissues. Inspired by the self-assembly of chemistry entities, the homogeneous network hydrogels, which contain over 90 wt% of water, were synthesized from covalent cross-links of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) triggered by microwave-assisted treatment. Structurally h… Show more

“…Two relatively independent reactions were included in the preparation of F-hydrogels. On the one hand, the self-assembly was performed between the alcoholic hydroxyl side groups of the PVA chain and ketone groups of the PVP chain under acid catalysis, obtaining the 1, 3-dioxane polymers . On the other hand, the C6-OH groups on different CNCs molecular chains coordinated to Fe 3+ ions, resulting in the dynamic “Y” shaped coordinates.…”

“…Afterwards, sulfuric acid solution was added and experienced an immediate reaction with the assistance of microwave. Under the catalysis of sulfuric acid, the alcoholic hydroxyl groups (-OH) of the PVA chain and the keto groups (C=O) of the PVP chain self-assembled into 1,3-dioxane polymer [25]. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of PVA, PVP, and the double-network hydrogel ( Figure S3) indicate that the characteristic peaks of PVA appear at 3273 cm -1 for -OH stretching vibration and 1316 cm -1 for C-O stretching vibration, respectively.…”

“…Herein, a simple two-step synthesis strategy of a microwave-assisted aldol condensation reaction [24,25] and freeze-thaw process [26] was proposed to synthesize a MXene-composited PVA/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) double-network hydrogel (MDN hydrogel). The resulting MDN hydrogel showed excellent mechanical properties of high stretchability, puncture resistance, and cyclic stability.…”
