Synthetic aspects of tetraorganotins and organotin(IV) halides

Abstract: Organotin(IV) compounds are being used for many applications, e.g., as stabilizers in PVC, in anti-fouling paints and coatings for the protection of ship hulls and as precursors for SnO 2 -coatings on glass. Tetraorganotins and especially organotin(IV) halides often serve as synthetic precursors. A wide range of methods for the synthetic preparation of these compounds has been developed since the 1940s. This review gives an overview of the available routes for the preparation of organotin(IV) compounds and dis… Show more

“…Such a low yield is typical for monoorganotin compounds (Thoonen et al , 2004 ) and in this specifi c case is probably caused by high Lewis acidity of tin atom, and thus the formation of a stannate species as an unidentifi ed byproduct. Compounds L CN SnX 3 are relatively stable to air and moisture and no decomposition or hydrolysis was observed after a long exposure of compounds on a watch glass under laboratory conditions.…”

“…The various applications of organotin(IV) compounds in many fields such as agriculture, medicine, antifouling paints, and wood preservatives are the main reasons several research groups are involved in the synthesis of new organotin(IV) compounds (R ů ž i č ka Thoonen et al, 2004;Basu et al, 2005;Hadjikakou and Hadjiliadis, 2009). Reports on structure determinations or spectroscopic characterizations of triphenyltin(IV) derivatives with monoand polybasic oxyanions (XO m n -; X = Cr, Se, S, As; m = 3, 4; n = 1, 2, 3) show that the oxyanions behave mainly as polydentate ligands involving a one-dimensional polymeric, bi-or tridimensional network structure (Molloy et al, 1989;Diop et al, 2002;Diass é -Sarr et al, 2004;Fall et al, 2010;Boye et al, 2012).…”
