Synthetic approaches to radiochemical probes for imaging of bacterial infections

Abstract: This present review provides an account on the available synthetic strategies employed to radiolabel commercial and potential bacteria-selective probes for tomographic imaging. These molecular probes encompass leukocytes, antibodies, small molecules, peptides, antibiotics, macrolides, vitamins, oligomers and siderophores. Although this technique has shown to be a valuable tool for non-invasive infection imaging, more development is required to create easy-to-radiolabel kit solutions/procedures for the preparat… Show more

“…The increasing incidence of bacterial infection with drug resistance is a major issue for human health ( Dutta et al, 2017 ). AuNPs are easily taken up by immune cells, due to their excellent cell affinity, which leads to precise delivery at the infected area, facilitating inhibition and damage to microbial pathogens ( Saha et al, 2007 ).…”

“…In clinic, many infectious diseases are still diagnosed by their clinical presentation, but the clinical symptoms and signs of clinical manifestations are often unobvious in the early stage [5]. Although newly developed 67 Ga-citrate, 18 F-FDG, and radiolabeled leukocytes have been marketed as tracers for infection imaging and provide good sensitivity for early-stage diagnosis, these leukocyte and metabolic imaging methods are inherently non-specific, still failing to distinguish bacterial infections from other inflammatory disorders [6]. All of these prompt the continuous increase of misdiagnosis and subsequent mismanagement.…”

“…In the study performed by Ozdemir et al., amoxicillin was labeled with 99m Tc. And in the review by Dutta et al., 99m Tc‐amoxicillin molecular structure was shown . Amoxicillin has similar structure ampicillin.…”
