Synthetic and Raman spectroscopic study of the fluorosulfates of zinc, cadmium, and mercury

Abstract: Can. J . Chem. 62, 382 (1984). The group IIB metal fluorosulfates of the type M(SO,F),, with M = Zn, Cd, or Hg, are conveniently obtained in a simple one-step procedure: the metal oxidation in a mixture of bis(fluorosulfuryl)peroxide and fluorosulfuric acid. The resulting white polymeric solids are all excellent Raman scatterers and provide the first consistent set of Raman data for this structural type. Above 400 cm-' six sharp Raman lines indicate retention of C, , symmetry for the tridentate fluorosulfate g… Show more

“…Si les complexes de cadmium se rapprochent de ceux du zinc, du cobalt ou du nickel (avec modifications des paramktres cristallins dues, certainement, aux rayons ioniques effectifs difftrents des cations mktalliques), les complexes du mercure en different totalement contrairement aux complexes fluorosulfato de la msme strie (46). Le comportement des complexes perchlorato semble 6tre dQ 5 l'aciditk diffkrente, selon Pearson, des cations M~+ (M = Zn, Cd, Hg).…”

“…Bis(fluorosulfuryl) peroxide, S 2 O 6 F 2 , was obtained by catalytic fluorination of sulfur trioxide . Mercuric fluorosulfate, Hg(SO 3 F) 2 , is synthesized by oxidation of mercury with S 2 O 6 F 2 in HSO 3 F as reported previously . Antimony(V) fluoride (Bayer, A.G.; Merck, Darmstadt, or Atochem North America, formerly Ozark-Mahoning) was purified by distillation at atmospheric pressure followed by trap to trap distillation in vacuo in a borosilicate apparatus.…”

“…The absorption band is narrow and intense, in contrast to those observed for ionic fluorosulfates (broad and weak). [24] The Raman spectrum (Figure 4) is also rich in bands due to the presence of four formula units (FUs) inside the crystallographic unit cell and concomitant Davidoff splitting and/or Fermi resonances (coupling of different tones, overtones or combination modes).…”
