Synthesis, Structural and Biomedical Characterization of Hydroxyapatite/Borosilicate Bioactive Glass Nanocomposites

Abstract: In this work, a borosilicate glass sample (5SiO -45B 2 O 3 -20Na 2 O-25CaO-5Ag 2 O) was added to nano-sized carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) powders with different contents up to 20 wt.% to improve the bioactivity, antibacterial effect, physical and mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposites. Then, these samples were mixed, milled with a high-energy ball mill, sintered at 700°C and subjected to Xray diffraction (XRD) technique, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron micr… Show more

“…The values of the elastic moduli: longitudinal modulus ( L ), shear modulus ( G ), Young’s modulus ( E ), bulk modulus ( B ), and Poisson’s ratio ( ν ) were determined using the pulse-echo method, the longitudinal (V L ) and shear (V S ) ultrasonic velocities of the nanocomposites [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…The samples were tested for compressive strength using the ASTM E9-19 standard. As previously mentioned [36,37], the speed of longitudinal and shear waves at room temperature was measured using the pulse-echo method using an ultrasonic digital signal processing system (Model MBS8000 DSP, MATEC Instrument Companies, Northborough, USA) with 5 MHz resonance. Static immersion weight loss was used at ambient temperature (25 • C) to assess the corrosion rate of sintered samples.…”

“…Over the past few decades, many articles have studied the bioactivity of borophosphate [27][28][29], borosilicate [30][31][32], and phosphosilicate glasses and glass-ceramics [33][34][35]. However, the bioactivity of borophosphosilicate glasses with a detailed prediction of the behavior of these glasses when implanted in the human body under body weight, investigate and explore the effect of increased loads and their relationship to the de ection that occurs in the structure of the samples and whether the bioactive glass samples will undergo yield or fracture has not been previously studied.…”
