Coal power plants are the major contributor of electricity but these power plants are also producing waste in the form of coal fly ash (CFA). However, it can cause high risk of environmental pollution and pulmonary diseases in humans. Plastic waste is also a problematic waste for many countries in terms of its reuse and recycling. Therefore, this study aims to reuse the waste product (CFA) of coal power plants in rubber conveyer belt instead of calcium carbonate or talcum powder and in recycling of plastic propylene as bonding filler material instead of barium sulfate to increase the durability of plastic products and reduce cost, CFA waste and plastic waste. For this purpose, CFA was treated by different pulverization techniques for the production of conveyor belt. The study found that the most favorable technique was shear based pulverization technique. Application of CFA with rubber was compared with two different chemicals (calcium carbonate and talcum powder) and found that the elongation at break of conveyor belt was 35% increased and abrasion volume was 64% reduced by using treated CFA. Furthermore, CFA was used in molten mass of plastic instead of barium sulfate and the results showed that the use of CFA has improved the dimensional stability of plastic material reducing the cost per ton by 2410 CNY. The study concluded that the performance was increased by applying CFA with a reduction in price as compared to other chemicals.

Recycling industrial wastes for high-value items is of strategic importance for commercial production. Fly ashes are solid waste by-products generated by coal-fired power plants. Although a large amount of annual output approach 150 million tons worldwide, fly ashes have been recycled merely into some low-value items. In order to realize the high additive value of fly ashes, we transform the solid waste fly ashes into nanostructured silicon powders and apply them as anodes active materials for lithium-ion batteries. The nanostructured silicon exhibits good electrochemical performance as lithium-ion batteries anodes with high rate capacity (1450.3 mAh g −1 at current density 4000 mA g −1) and reversible capacity (1017.5 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles), indicating that fly ashes can be a useful resource of anode materials to meet the need of high performance lithium-ion batteries.

The fly ash of coal, generated in a thermoelectric plant, was used to synthesize zeolite by hydrothermal treatment with a sodium hydroxide solution. The zeolite synthesized was used as an adsorbent of metals (Fe and Mn) and of the methylene blue dye in water. The characterization of the zeolite showed that silicon oxide is the main compound in its composition, followed by aluminum, iron, sodium and calcium, which together correspond to more than 86% of its composition. These were used to investigate the kinetic parameters of adsorption and the isotherm of the metals and the methylene blue dye in aqueous solutions. Three kinetic models, pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion were used to predict adsorption rate constants. The adsorption kinetics of the dye and metals followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and reached equilibrium in 15 minutes with a 99% removal rate for metals, independently of the pH. The values of the diffusion constants (K2) for iron in pH 5, 7 and 8 were 1.3158; 1.3881 e 0.6053 mg.g-1.min-1 and for manganese 1.2511; 1.5239 and 1.4336 mg.g-1.min-1, respectively. For methylene blue, the removal rate was 90% and the constant (K2) value was 0.5437 mg.g-1.min-1. The studies showed the existence of different stages in the adsorption of the metals and the methylene blue dye in zeolite.
