Synthesis of uniform PMMA microspheres employing modified SPG (shirasu porous glass) emulsification technique

Abstract: SYNOPSISApplication of the particulate microporous glass membrane (SPG) was extended to the synthesis of fairly monodisperse poly(methy1 methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres. Hydrophilic monomers have been believed to yield polymer particles of a broad size distribution when the SPG technique was employed. This difficulty was overcome by adopting the droplet swelling technique. The primary uniform emulsion composed of a mixture of hydrophobic diluent (and/or monomer), cosurfactant, and initiator was prepared with… Show more

“…Fifteen milliliters of aqueous monomer solution containing 3.6 M N-IPAAm, 0.4 M AAc, 0.03 M MBAAm, and 0.005 M AP was dispersed in an oil phase composed of 500 ml of cyclohexane containing 1.0% (v/v) SUNSOFT818H to prepare w/o emulsion by the use of a MPG (microporous glass) membrane apparatus (Ise Chemical Corp.) equipped with a SPG membrane (13)(14)(15). The emulsion was stirred at 700 rpm to prevent aggregation.…”
