Synthesis of Ultrafine Carbon Black by Pyrolysis of Polymers Using a Direct Current Thermal Plasma Process

Abstract: A direct current thermal plasma system was developed and applied to synthesize ultrafine carbon black by using PS (polystyrene) and HDPE (high density polyethylene) as carbon sources. The precursors were pyrolyzed at different temperatures and the pyrolysis products were employed to investigate the actual synthesis of carbon black through the plasma jet. Spherical carbon nanoparticles with a high degree of turbostratic structure were obtained, showing a fingerprint graphite structure with a large surface area … Show more

“…So far, a number of synthetic protocols, including thermal pyrolysis of organic compounds, [15][16][17] arc-discharge methods, [18][19][20] laser ablation, 21,22 and chemical vapor deposition [23][24][25] have been developed for the preparation of doped carbon nanomaterials with different sizes, shapes, and chemical compositions. Despite their general feasibility, all of these methods typically suffer from several limitations.…”

“…As expected, XRD of the synthesized materials confirmed the presence of graphitized carbon, more prominently for the relatively high-pressure samples of Ag-C7 and Ag-C8, for which the atomic interplanar distance d 002 was estimated as 3.36 Å (figure 3). There are several reports available on the controlled synthesis of carbon nanosheets, where the parameter d 002 was used to quantify their level of crystallinity; the value reported in this current report is one of the smallest ever achieved by a thermal-plasma method [25,32]. Standard XRD peaks of silver were also observed.…”

“…The solid product from LLDPE non-catalytic pyrolysis contains carbon black, which can be substituted for any commercial carbon black. However, the yield of carbon black from polymer pyrolysis with plasma treatment reached only 81%-82% [46]. For this reason, it was assumed that 1 kg of pyrolytic solid product can count as 0.5 kg of commercial carbon black.…”
