Synthesis of Super Hydrophobic Clay by Solution Intercalation Method from Aqueous Dispersions

Abstract: The super hydrophobic materials have inspired a great deal of interest and research in recent years because of their unique water-repellent, self-cleaning properties, and their potential for practical applications. This study aims to create a super hydrophobic clay surface from aqueous dispersions of a long-chain hydrocarbon, Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB), and layered silicate via the solution intercalation method. First, to increase diusing tendency of CTA + ions from aqueous medium to the interlayer … Show more

“…The natural clays (Figure 8‐1) show hydrophilic surfaces with large wettability by water, similar to silicon oxide 68 . After treatment with CTAB, the contact angle changes from 0° to 55–57° (Figures 8‐1(b), (c)), showing a substantial hydrophilicity decrease 69 …”

“…where p 1 and p 2 are the pressures on the high pressure and low pressure sides of the coating, l is the coating thickness, A is the coating area, and q t is the volumetric flow rate. Considering the ability of the cation exchange capacity of clay minerals, Acikyildiz et al 151 used the solution intercalation method to diffuse CTA + ions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) into the interlayer of clay mineral in the dispersion of a long-chain hydrocarbon solution. It was noted that the static contact angle of organoclay gradually increased the amount of hydrocarbon.…”

“…The CTAB-modified clay was prepared according to a previously published procedure on the preparation of surfactant modified montmorillonite. 28,29 The cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay was determined by the methylene blue test (ANSI/ASTM C837-76). The results are given in Table 1.…”
