Energy consumption has become an urgent issue not only for the global environment, but also for people's lives. Among total energy consumption, buildings take nearly 40%. For buildings, energy exchange through windows accounts for over 50% by means of conduction, convection, and radiation. To reduce energy consumption, new structures should be developed for glass surfaces to enhance their thermal insulation properties. Vanadium dioxide (VO 2) is the most well-known thermochromic material, which exhibits a notable optical change from transparent to reflecting in the infrared upon a semiconductor-to-metal phase-transition. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive summary of advances on the VO 2-based thermochromic coatings. Although the research on VO 2 smart window has been carried on for several decades, the real commercial use of it has not yet been achieved. The hindrance factors against commercial use are conventionally known as the unsatisfactory intrinsic properties of VO 2 material and have recently emerged as new challenges.

The vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel dipping on a glass slide substrate at low temperature of 500°C in a vacuum tube furnace at a pressure of 2 × 10−3 mbar by 2-step calcination without an intermediate gas purging. Synthesis conditions, including temperature, vacuum pressure, and calcination steps in the vacuum tube furnace, were investigated to find the optimum condition that promoted the formation of VO2 phase. It was found that the 2nd calcination step was very important in realizing the monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2 (M)). The results of the valence electron analysis revealed the outstanding phase of VO2 and a small amount of V2O5 and V2O3 phases. The small crystallites of the VO2 were homogeneously distributed on the surface, and the grain was of an irregular shape of ∼220−380 nm in size. The film’s thickness was in a range of 69−74 nm. The film exhibited a metal-to-insulator transformation temperature of ∼68oC and good thermochromic property. Visible optical transmittance remained at ∼40−50% when the sample’s temperature changed from 25 to 80°C for a near infrared (NIR) region.

Abstract. Thin films composed of high pure VO 2 (A) doped W 6+ ions were successfully prepared by an inorganic sol-gel method. The effects of W 6+ ions doping on the structure, surface morphology and electrical property the films were investigated. The results show that the solution of W 6+ ions distorted the lattice of VO 2 (A) film, and made the lattice parameter d increase. With W 6+ ions concentration increase, the grain size of the film increased, and the grain shape became rod or block from sphere. The film resistance decreases sharply, near one magnitude with the W 6+ doping concentration increase from 0 to 0.75 at%. And W 6+ doping made the film TCR close to zero from a negative value, the film change to metal from semiconductor.
