Synthesis of starch‐based flocculant by multi‐component grafting copolymerization and its application in oily wastewater treatment

Abstract: The grafting copolymerization of methacryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), acrylamide (AM) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) on starch was initiated by KMnO 4 , HIO 4 and H 2 SO 4 composite system. The modification of starch was combined its best attributes with those of inorganic and organic polymers and therefore enhanced the flocculation effect when it was used as flocculants by increasing the charge neutralization, adsorption bridging and aggregation ability. The main influence factors on oil remo… Show more

“…Flocculation is a form of coagulation, when fine suspended dispersed particles in a liquid or gaseous medium form loose flocculated clusters, i.e., floccules. Natural [36,37] and synthetic water-soluble polymers [38,39] and their polycomplexes [40,41] are used as flocculants for raw water treatment.…”

“…The most commonly used plant species for starch extraction are corn, cassava, potato, rice, yam and plantain. Unmodified and modified starch has been used to develop various biopolymers for food packaging, artificial muscles, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, among others [19,[21][22][23][24].…”
