A simple catalytic protocol for the synthesis of novel spiro[indoline-pyranodioxine] derivatives has been developed using ZnO nanoparticle as an efficient, green, and reusable catalyst. The derivatives are obtained in moderate to excellent yield by one-pot three-component reaction of an isatin, malononitrile/ethylcyanoacetate, and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione in absolute ethanol under conventional heating and microwave irradiation. The catalyst was recovered by filtration from the reaction mixture and reused during five consecutive runs without any apparent loss of activity for the same reaction. The mild reaction conditions and recyclability of the catalyst make it environmentally benign synthetic procedure.

magnified image A series of 3′‐(4‐(2‐methyl/phenyl/benzylthiazol‐4‐yl)phenyl)spiro[indoline‐3,2′‐thiazolidine]‐2,4′‐diones was synthesized. The structures of the synthesized compounds were evaluated by analytical and spectral (IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, LC‐MS, and elemental analysis) methods. All the synthesized compounds were screened for qualitative (Zone of inhibition) and quantitative antimicrobial activities (MIC). Most of the derivatives showed good activity towards Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2010).

Isatin is synthetically a versatile substrate that can be used for the synthesis of large variety of heterocyclic compounds. 5-substituted isatins were treated with 2-amino-5-chlorobenzo phenone to form Schiff's bases. Spirothiozolidin-4-ones and 5'-methyl-spiro-4-thiazolidiones were synthesized Schiff's bases of isatins by treating with thioglycolic acid and thiolactic acid, respectively in the presence of 1,4-dioxane and anhydrous zinc chloride. The structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. These compounds were screened for their antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method. Compound A02 found to possess potent antioxidant activity compared to the standards ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene.
