Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Bombyx mori silk fibroin and antibacterial activity

Abstract: In the present work, the stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were produced in situ in the presence of white light, using aqueous silk fibroin (SF) acquired from Bombyx mori silk. The UV-Visible spectral study explained the production of AgNPs by displaying a distinctive surface plasmon resonance band (SPR) at the wavelength 424 nm. The crystalline nature of the produced AgNPs have been identified using XRD study. Nanocrystalline phase of silver (Ag) with face centered cubic (FCC) structure was observed by XRD.… Show more

“…Nanotechnology is an important field of applied science and technology dealing with design, synthesis and manipulation of particles whose structures range from approximately 1-100 nm [8,9]. In recent years, rapid advances have been made in the development of the VNp using different precursor materials such as shellac [10], iron oxide (Fe 3-δ O 4 magnetite nanoparticles) [11], silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) [10], gold [12], a lipid matrix with antioxidant [13], porous silicon coupled to a peptide [14], chitosan [15], poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) [16,17], lipid-polymer hybrid (glyceryl tripalmitate/Eudragit RS100) [18].…”

“…In summary, phenolic groups act as capping agents, stabilizing the AgNPs within the hydrogel by reducing Ag + to Ag 0 . Simultaneously, this process promotes the initiation of dityrosine crosslinking in photocrosslinkable environments [18,34].…”

“…One of the most attractive plant proteins is silk fibroin. 76 Silk fibroin is an insoluble, biocompatible protein that is extracted from the silkworm Bombyx mori. The presence of tyrosine in the structure of this protein renders it a bioreducing agent for the preparation of inorganic nanomaterials.…”
