Synthesis of Poly(styrene-acrylates-acrylic acid) Microspheres and Their Chemical Composition towards Colloidal Crystal Films

Abstract: In this paper, polystyrene colloidal microspheres have been prepared using hexyl acrylate (HA), ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), isooctyl acrylate (IOA), butyl acrylate (BA), or isobutyl acrylate (IBA) as comonomers. Microspheres with diameters from 212 to 332 nm and with a polystyrene content of 65-78% were prepared. The particles prepared in this work do not present the typical coreshell structure; as a consequence, DSC analysis showed that the microspheres exhibited only one . TEM images show that the particles w… Show more

“…These results illustrated that the diameters of spheres could be controlled by changing the amount of emulsifier in the polymerization system. The diameters measured with TEM were slightly smaller than the hydrodynamic diameters measured by DLS, similar to Tang et al [11] and Ríos-Osuna et al [27]. This phenomenon could be explained by the weak aggregation of the spheres and water loss shrinkage of the shell of spheres.…”

“…This study shows that the polydispersity index is generally close to one, indicating uniform submicron particle size distributions. In addition, irrespective of the polydispersity index, the latex particle size of the styrene/acrylic acid system was found to be inversely proportional to the acrylic acid concentration in the polymerization medium [ 37 , 38 ].…”

“…On the other hand, acrylate monomer provides better adhesion, elasticity, durability, and binding properties . By regulating the composition and sequence of the styrene and acrylate of the copolymer, tuning the polymer's glass transition ( T g ), minimum film forming temperature, the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties, morphological control etc can be made rather easily …”
