Synthesis of PEGylated chitosan copolymers as efficiently antimicrobial coatings for leather

Abstract: In this work, poly(ethylene glcycol)-grafted chitosan (PEG-g-CS) was synthesized by conjugating PEG to the chitosan (CS) backbone. Such PEGylated CS copolymer was further characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR, and the results demonstrated the successful synthesis. After PEGylation, the water solubility of CS was significantly improved due to the hydrophilicity of the PEG polymer. Therefore, this PEGylated CS was prepared as water borne coating for leather surface. The morphology and hydrophilicity of this coating … Show more

“…In addition, due to the inconvenience of night administration, the pharmacological peak-valley phenomenon is prominent, greatly affecting the treatment effect of ocular drugs. With the development of novel technologies, novel ophthalmic drug delivery systems have been designed to effectively elevate ocular bioavailability by prolonging the retention time of drugs in the eye or improving the penetration of drugs into the cornea and conjunctiva (3,4). …”

“…The results demonstrated that PEG-gCS@AgNPs coating exhibited significant advantages in antibacterial property than that of PEG-g-CS and chitosan coating, which is consistent with the MIC results. Our previous work has proved that PEGylated chitosan (PEG-g-CS) exhibited more efficient antibacterial activity than that of singe CS coating due to the synergistic antimicrobial property of PEG and CS [5]. Wherein, the PEG component played the role in preventing the adhesion of bacteria on the coating surface while CS sustainably inhibited the growth of bacteria by contact killing.…”

“…PEG-g-CS copolymers were synthesized according to our previous report [5]. The amino substitution degree (SD) of PEG-g-CS defined as the number of PEG group per 100 amino groups of CS was determined by TNBS method [36].…”
