“…The particularly large red shifts in the catechol group are attributable to their ability to strongly adsorb on to the TiO 2 surface 70 as well as the increased dipole moment of the surface-bound metal-ligand complex 26,27 . For some of the other groups such as isophorone 71 , malononitrile 72 , thiazolidine 73 and benzoic acid 74 , a majority of the cases are blue-shifted. The impact of multiple anchoring groups 75 was also studied (see Fig.…”

“…5 Similarly, IP is a good solvent for inks, lacquers, gums and coating materials, 6 as well as a reactant for polyurethanes, pharmaceuticals, fragrances and other commercial chemicals. [7][8][9] Currently, NaOH or KOH is used as a catalyst for the liquid phase condensation of acetone, 10 which is confronted with great challenges such as corrosiveness, hard recycling and low catalytic activity. In order to overcome these problems, a better catalyst needs to be developed.…”

“…The Knoevenagel condensation reaction, employing a basic catalyst, is a classical organic synthesis method that is used in applications including dyes for solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes, pharmaceuticals, as well as for the modification of food and personal care products. Here, we study Knoevenagel amino catalysis involving the reaction between an aromatic aldehyde and an active methylene compound forming a fluorescent dye product in the presence of a surface bound amino catalyst. Using SM fluorescence methods based on super-resolution TIRF microscopy combined with the stochastic analysis of fluorescence time series employing Hidden Markov modeling, we found the kinetics of Knoevenagel amino catalysis to be a multistep process where reactants and intermediates have a complex interplay with the catalyst.…”
