In recent years, the biosynthesized of metallic nanoparticles has been rapidly growing due to their environmentally synthesis and widespread applications in science and industry. In this study, we have reported the green synthesis of NiONPs using an aqueous extract of Trigonella subenervis (NiONPs@TS). The nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). To find various applications for NiONPs@TS, the nanoparticles (NPs) were used as a catalyst for synthesizing some benzimidazole derivatives. The electrochemical behavior and antibacterial activity of NiONPs@TS were also evaluated. FE-SEM images exhibited a uniform spherical morphology in size of 28.21 nm for the biosynthesized nanoparticles. According to the XRD analysis, 26.43 nm was measured for NiONPs@TS crystal size. Benzimidazole derivatives were synthesized using NiONPs@TS as the catalyst with a yield of 69-92%. NiONPs@TS showed a significant electrocatalytic activity to glucose oxidation. The linear response range and detection limit were found to be 10-200 and 3.2 μM, respectively. Furthermore, NiONPs@TS exhibited an acceptable antibacterial activity in various assays, including well diffusion, disk diffusion, minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The best antibacterial activity was obtained against Bacillus subtilis with MIC of 4.0 ± 0.0 μg/ml and MBC of 6.7 ± 2.3 μg/ml. The obtained results showed the ability of NiONPs@TS in different fields such as catalytic, electrochemical sensing, and antibacterial activity, which can be contributed to the presence of biomolecules in T. subenervis extract.

Effect of the amount of river sediment on the basic properties of cement mortars

According to current legal regulations, bottom sediment in watercourses containing heavy metals are considered dangerous to the environment and should be properly managed after extraction. Due to the well-known excellent ability of the products of cement hydration to immobilize heavy metals, the possibility of utilizing this type of waste products in cement composites was preliminary tested. For this purpose, basic research was carried out on the technological and mechanical characteristics of binders containing sediment from one of the rivers located in Lesser Poland. Standard mortars made of Portland cement CEM I and river sediment dried at 105°C were used for the tests. This supplement replaced cement in the amount of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% by weight. The technological properties such as: water demand, setting time, consistency and mechanical properties were verified. Compressive and tensile strength at bending of hardened mortars were tested at different curing periods, i.e. after 14, 28 and 90 days. The obtained test results confirm that the fraction of river sediment in the binder in the amount of 10% generally does not adversely affect the properties of mortars, however, its greater amount is reflected in changes in the technological features and in a clear reduction of mechanical properties of the tested mortars.

Thermally activated perlite-supported cobalt oxide (Co-TAP) catalyst has been synthesized via the deposition-precipitation method. FTIR peaks at around 663 and 565 cm -1 and XRD peaks arise from diffraction of FCC planes of CoO crystals confirm the presence of Co 3 O 4 crystallites on Co-TAP surface. UV-Vis DRS studies reveal the presence of octahedrally coordinated Co 3+ and tetrahedrally coordinated Co 2+ ions. EDX analysis of Co-TAP clearly shows the enhanced percentage of silica and cobalt oxide. All characterization studies suggest the presence of Lewis acidic sites on Co-TAP which have been utilized in a series of liquid-phase esterification reactions of benzoic acid with various alcohols over three different reaction media (conventional, microwave, and sonication). The reactions are carried out in one-pot, single-step, solvent-free reaction conditions, and the catalyst is filtered easily, regenerated, and reused up to five reaction cycles with analogous efficiency suggesting that acidic sites of the catalyst remain stable in all reaction mediums. The stability of regenerated Co-TAP catalyst after the fifth reaction cycle is confirmed by FTIR spectrum which resembles the FTIR of fresh catalyst.
