Synthesis of new diacid monomers and poly(amide-imide)s: study of structure–property relationship and applications

Abstract: Two diimide-diacid monomers 4,4′-bis[4″-(trimellitimido)phenyl isopropylidene-4″′-phenoxy]diphenyl sulfone and 4,4′-bis[4″-(trimellitimido)phenylisopropylidene-4″′-phenoxy] were synthesized. The structures of the monomers were characterized by FT-IR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. A series of novel poly(amide-imide)s were prepared from this two diacids and aromatic diamines through phosphorylation reaction. The PAIs were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, XRD, TGA, and DSC, solution viscosity, solubility test and elec… Show more

“…Polyimides are divided into two main classes known as aliphatic [2] and aromatic. Aromatic polyimides are finding increased application in microelectronics since their high thermal stability, good chemical resistance and durability [3]. However, they have limited solubility in organic solvents as a result of a rigid polymer backbone.…”

“…The synthetic studies guided by the computational calculations in the literature revealed that polymers with high dielectric constants (>4) involve aromatic groups and structural functionalities: eNHe, eC(]O)e, or eO [12]. Upto now several works have been performed on polyimide with added Al 2 O 3 , BaTiO 3 and ZrO 3 which showed an improved dielectric constant [13e15]. The phosphine oxide based polyimides and their inorganic hybrids are the essential part of our studies because of their good solubility in solvents, mechanical strength, thermal stability and adhesive property [16].…”

“…Aromatic polyamides are well known for their high temperature stability, excellent mechanical strength and good chemical resistance that qualify them as highperformance polymeric materials [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] . However, the applications of aromatic polyamides are often limited due to infusibility and insolubility, which are caused by the high regularity, rigid polymer backbones and the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding.…”

“…Many significant synthetic efforts have been made to improve the processability without compromising on the thermal stability. The most efficient methods are (i) incorporation of flexible linkages in the polyimides chain, (ii) incorporation of kinks in the polyimides chain, (iii) incorporation of large nonpolar and polar pendant groups in the polyimides chain, and (iv) attachment of flexible side chain in the polyimides chain [9][10][11][12].…”
