Synthesis of Nano-Hydroxyapatite from Snakehead (<i>Channa striata</i>) Fish Bone and its Antibacterial Properties

Abstract: Nano-hydroxyapatite was synthesized by coprecipitation method and tested its antibacterial properties. Nano-hydroxyapatite was synthesized using CaO precursors from snakehead (Channa striata) fish bones and (NH4)2HPO4. The synthesis was carried out with temperature variations of 30, 60, 80, and 100 °C. Antibacterial activity was determined using two types of bacteria, namely gram-positive and gram-negative. The XRD spectra show that the highest peak is hydroxyapatite synthesized at a temperature of 100 °C. Hyd… Show more

“…The degrees of sharpness of the peaks were found to increase gradually on raising the heat treatment temperature informing the increase in crystallinity of the extracted material as the calcination process helps to release the collagens, fats and other impurities that are bound to the bone powders. 55 The results are in line with the former studies reports. 30,47 Furthermore, the broad diffraction peaks observed are closely matched to the stoichiometric HAp characterized pattern (based on ICDD 9-432).…”

“… 34 Moreover, a considerable peak at 1250 cm −1 is apparently assigned to C-N bonds 35 with the CEC-AHA scaffold. In the subchondral scaffold, the wavenumbers of 551 and 599 cm −1 are representative of P-O groups with nHAP 36 and other phosphate stretches were observed at 1098 cm −1 . 37 The characteristic bands of the carbonate groups were exposed at 871 and 1461 cm −1 .…”

“…11 This result was in line with Hariani et al which explained that Snakehead (Channa striata) fish bone nano-hydroxyapatite solution has antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli. 12 There has been no research examining the antibacterial ability of nano-hydroxyapatite paste of Snakehead (Channa striata) fish bone against S.mutans.…”
