In this study, a Na-x zeolite was synthesized by using metakaolin from Narathiwat kaolinite, amorphous silica from rice husk ash, and high CaO fly ash from the Mae Moh electrical plant by using the alkaline fusion method. The mixture of fly ash, amorphous silica and metakaolin was fused in NaOH followed by incubation at 70°C for 24 h. An amorphous silica from rice husk ash and metakaolin were added to high CaO fly ash to increase the SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of fusion materials. The fused mixtures of high CaO fly ash, amorphous silica and metakaolin were mixed in the weight ratio of 1:3:6 giving a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 3.25 to achieve a Na-x zeolite phase. The synthesized zeolite was characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, and BET techniques. The CEC and specific surface area of the Na-x zeolite were 420 meq 100 g −1 and 398 m 2 /g, respectively.

Currently, there has been a growing interest of zeolite materials for industrial and scientific purpose. Synthetic zeolites are more often used than natural ones due to its higher purity and more uniform particle sizes. Numerous investigations are conducted in searching of inexpensive raw materials suitable for zeolite synthesis. Moreover, the temperature, pressure, times and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio are the most important parameters which play key roles in the synthesis processes. Due to such a large number of factors that affect the process, zeolite synthesis has been undergoing constant development. Nowadays, researchers focus on the methods of synthesizing zeolites at ambient temperature and pressure. Metakaolin and tuff are natural raw materials which can be turned into a brand new class of synthetic zeolites. However, each requires different method of synthesis in order to obtain a material with best physical properties. This paper discusses the process of alkaline activation of synthetic zeolites from natural raw materials: volcanic tuff excavated in Filipowice and metakaolin obtained from Rominco company. Two methods: fusion and low-temperature synthesis, were used in the presented research. Moreover, the physical properties of raw materials and zeolites obtained were shown. Based on the XRD analysis, it was verified that materials after the synthesis process contained zeolites A, Na-X and faujasite-Na. Furthermore, the dehydration and thermal decomposition phenomena of the tuff and metakaolin before and after the synthesis process were determined by coupled TG/MS techniques.

Abstract. In Poland, by 2020 430,000 Mg of hazardous waste will be formed annually by the combustion of waste. This waste must be properly managed so as not to endanger the environment. One promising way to manage selected waste is to process it in the synthesis of materials characterised by sorption properties. The results presented in this paper concern the possibility of producing sorbents from waste materials marked with codes 190112 and 190114, which came from two waste incineration plants in Poland. Alkaline activation was performed using two methods: a) hydrothermal, in a solution of 8 M NaOH at 75°C for 24 h; and b) in an autoclave, using a solution of 2 M NaOH at 140°C for 6 h. XRD analyses led to the identification of materials after synthesis of the following zeolite phases: analcime, chabazite and thomsonite. chabazite and analcime can be valuable absorbent materials.
