Spherical mechanisms are widely used in engineering applications. Minimizing their motion error is critical for high performance of such mechanisms. The motion error is significantly affected by uncertainties in spherical mechanisms. The impact of the uncertainties on the motion error, however, is rarely considered in mechanism analysis and synthesis. In this work, we quantify the effects of randomness in the major mechanism dimension variables on the motion error through kinematic reliability with a probabilistic approach. Two types of reliability, the point kinematic reliability and the interval kinematic reliability, are discussed. For the former the First Order Second Moment (FOSM) method is employed while for the latter a multiple-extreme-value method is proposed to maintain high accuracy. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is performed as a benchmark for the accuracy comparison. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with two examples.

System reliability analysis for kinematic performance of planar mechanisms.Based on the reliability and mechanism kinematic accuracy theories, we propose a general methodology for system reliability analysis of kinematic performance of planar mechanisms. The loop closure equations are used to estimate the kinematic performance errors of planar mechanisms. Reliability and system reliability theories are introduced to develop the limit state functions (LSF) for failure of kinematic performance qualities. The statistical fourth moment method and the Edgeworth series technique are used on system reliability analysis for kinematic performance of planar mechanisms, which relax the restrictions of probability distribution of design variables. These factors include design, manufacturing and assembly tolerances and deviations of actuators. Since these random factors are inevitable, while designing a mechanism, it is necessary to take into account kinematic performance errors resulting from the influence of main random factors on key components. And it is meaningful to select an appropriate working range under a specific manufacturing and working condition that makes the mechanisms satisfy the requirement of system reliability of kinematic performance as much as possible.Performance reliability assessment of mechanisms is more difficulty than reliability analysis of structures. However in the past decades, through the joint efforts of researchers at home and abroad, the reliability theory is perfecting [1][2][3][4] , and various attempts have been made to analysis and synthesis for the performance errors of mechanisms. Gupta [5] and Wang [6] studied the evaluation methods of the kinemactic accuracy errors of mechanisms through the interpretation of the properties of original errors. An efficient matrix method in assembly tolerance analysis of mechanisms is proposed by Huang [7] , Ting [8] and Wittwer [9] , which is based upon the partial differentiation of the geometric constraint equations. In order to obtain transfer matrix methods for precision analysis of mechanisms, Lin [10] and Yang [11] utilized the D-H matrix on mapping the original errors to the global coordinate system. Tsai [12] and Wang [13] introduced a generalized method for error analysis of mechanisms with joint clearance.
