Synthesis of graphene oxide–methacrylic acid–sodium allyl sulfonate copolymer and its tanning properties

Abstract: Graphite oxide nanosheets (GONs) and the copolymer of GONs with methacrylic acid (MAA) and sodium allyl sulfonate (SAS) (poly(GON-MAA-SAS)) were prepared. The GONs in poly(GON-MAA-SAS) are smaller and uniformly dispersed, allowing them to penetrate into collagen fibers of leather and produce better tanning effects than current nano-tanning agents. Tanning effects due to chemical bonding and nanoeffects are elucidated by measuring the shrinkage temperature (T s ) of wet and dry leather. The results indicate tha… Show more

“…27,28 Meanwhile, the previous researches have manifested that AM and SAS were harmless and eco-friendly, and therefore AM and SAS were selected to prepare template copolymer (TPAS) through UPT and it has prospective applications in water treatment in future. 29,30 This new way for preparation of a new anionic copolymer with a microblock structure will be meaningful and signicant in polymer synthesis and application.…”

“…1a ) displayed the characteristic bands at 3417 cm −1 , 1734 cm −1 , 1615 cm −1 , 1410 cm −1 , 1234 cm −1 and 1045 cm −1 for the stretching vibration of the –OH group, C O stretching vibration, C C stretching vibration of aromatic rings, –OH deformation, C–OH stretching and C–O (epoxy) stretching respectively. 46 When PVP–CeO 2 was introduced into GO sheets, the intensity of C O and C–OH bands decreased significantly whereas the band at 1045 cm −1 disappeared completely indicating the reduction of GO leading to the formation of PVP–CeO 2 /rGO ( Fig. 1b ).…”
