Synthesis of dimethyl acetal of ketones: design of solid acid catalysts for one-pot acetalization reaction

Abstract: The synthesis of dimethyl acctals of carbonyl compounds such as cyclohcxanone, acetophenone, and bcnzophenone has successfully been carried out by the reaction between ketones and methanol using different solid acid catalysts. The strong influence of the · textural properties of the catalysts such as acid amount and adsorption properties (surface area and pore volume) determine thẽ catalytic activity. The molecular size of the reactants and products determine the acetalization ability of a particular ketone. T… Show more

“…[232] Among various rare-earths-exchanged Mg-Y zeolites, CeMg-Y and Ce-montmorillonite were revealed to be the most efficient catalysts for the acetalization reactions. Acetalization of cyclohexanone reached equilibrium within 60 min and the yields of acetal were 66.7 % with CeMg-Y zeolite and 69.8 % with Ce-montmorillonite.…”

“…Then, aromatic monomers underwent hydrogenation (k 4 to k 8 ) yielding the corresponding saturated monomers. The route that produced methoxycyclohexane and 1.1-dimethoxycyclohexane, from cyclohexanone acetylation with methanol [43,44], is also included in Fig. 5 (k 9 and k 10 ).…”

“…1,5 Acetal derived compounds have been used as a solvent in fragrance industries, cosmetics, food and beverage additives, pharmaceuticals, in the synthesis of enantiomerically pure compounds, and in polymer chemistry. 6,7 Acetals have been also used in motor oils, lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids. Hille et al, 8 have evaluated various acetals as more biodegradable continuous phase in an invert-emulsion for off-shore drilling petroleum operations.…”
