Synthesis of cross-linked chitosan possessing N-methyl-d-glucamine moiety (CCTS-NMDG) for adsorption/concentration of boron in water samples and its accurate measurement by ICP-MS and ICP-AES

Abstract: A chitosan resin derivatized with N-methyl-D-glucamine (CCTS-NMDG) wassynthesized by using a cross-linked chitosan (CCTS) as base material. The N-methyl-D-glucamine (NMDG) moiety was attached to the amino group of CCTS through the arm of chloromethyloxirane. The adsorption behavior of 59 elements on the synthesized resin was systematically examined by using the resin packed in a mini-column, passing water samples through it and measuring the adsorbed elements in eluates by ICP-MS. The CCTS-NMDG resin shows hig… Show more

“…Cross-linked chitosan (CCTS) with the cross-linker of ethyleneglycoldiglycidylether (EGDE) was synthesized in a similar manner to the previous work [15,[18][19][20]. Amino group of 3-nitro-4-amino benzoic acid moiety (NABA, 10 g) was protected with benzaldehyde as in the previous work [20] before its reaction with CCTS.…”

“…The column pretreatment procedures are similar to our previous work [15,[18][19][20][21]. The resin, packed in the mini-columns, was washed with each 10-mL of 2 M nitric acid and ultrapure water.…”

“…In the first step, the cross-linked chitosan (CCTS) with the arm of chloromethyloxirane was synthesized in a similar manner as in our previous work. [25][26][27] In the second step, 4-hydroxyphthalic acid (HPA; 10 g) was chemically bonded to CCTS (5 g) by coupling the hydroxyl group of HPA with the chloro terminal of the arm of CCTS. In this procedure, a 2 mol l -1 NaOH (40 ml) solution was added to a suspended mixture in 100 ml of dioxane, and it was refluxed for 3 h. Then, the final product (CCTS-HPA) was filtered on a glass filter and washed with methanol and water.…”

“…Cross-linked chitosan itself has been derivatized with several functional groups, and has been applied to solid phase extraction techniques; For example, cross-linked chitosan derivatized with serine moiety for U collection [26], leucine moiety for Mo collection [27], dithiocarbamate [28] and iminodi(methylphosponic acid) [29] moieties for trace elements collection, N-methyl-D-glucamine moiety for B collection [30], 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid moiety for As and Se collection [31], and ethylenediamine moiety for Ag collection [32].…”
