Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers for Organic Solar Cell Applications

Abstract: Yen-Ju Cheng received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the National Taiwan University (NTU) in 2004 under the supervision of Professor Tien-Yau Luh. After spending another year as a postdoctoral assistant with Prof. Luh at NTU, he joined Prof. Alex K.-Y. Jen's group as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington in 2005. In the summer of 2008, he joined the Department of Applied Chemistry, National Chiao Tung University, in Taiwan as an assistant professor. His current research interest is focu… Show more

“…There are many recent examples of high performing co-polymers with benzothiadiazole. 16 An exemplary case is the donor polymer developed through a collaboration between UCSB and Konarka, which is an alternating copolymer of benzothiadiazole and dialkylated cyclopentabithiophene, 17 commonly known as PCPDTBT (poly [2,6- Fig. 4.…”

“…The most notable structural difference between these derivatives and the alkylbased DASAs is the presence of an aromatic ring, where homoconjugation may result in a bathochromic absorption shift due to enhanced hybridization of molecular orbitals between the electron-rich donors and acceptor groups, an effect commonly observed with "push-pull" systems in organic semiconductors. 35,36 Using readily available aniline-based donors, the absorbance maxima of barbituric-based DASAs were tuned from 582 to 669 nm.…”

“…Especially, the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) are promising because of some advantages, such as simple preparation, low cost, light weight, and large area flexible fabrication. This has been the focus of research in the past decade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…”
