Synthesis of Block Copolymer Brush by RAFT and Click Chemistry and Its Self-Assembly as a Thin Film

Abstract: A well-defined block copolymer brush poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-graft-(poly(methyl methacrylate)-block- poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)) (PGMA-g-(PMMA-b-POEGMA)) is synthesized via grafting from an approach based on a combination of click chemistry and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The resulting block copolymer brushes were characterized by 1H-NMR and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The self-assembly of the block copolymer brush was then in… Show more

“…Thankappan et al [49] have prepared graft copolymers via the "grafting on" method by synthesizing the backbone and the side chains and then grafting them via "click chemistry". The group separately prepared POEGMA-b-PMMA and PGMA via CPADB CTA, with rather low molecular mass and narrow M w /M n .…”

“…The two polymers were clicked together to afford a narrow-dispersed comb copolymer with a M n = (3.4–12.5) kg⋅mol − 1 and Ð = 1.12–1.18. Later, a similar strategy was put into practice [ 207 ] by grafting an alkynyl-terminated polymer onto pendant azide groups of another macromolecule. To that end, glycidyl methacrylate was polymerized in the presence of 4-cyano-4(phenylcarbonothioylthio) pentanoic acid as a RAFT agent and treated with sodium azide and ammonium chloride to functionalize each monomer unit with an azide group.…”

“…The idea behind RAFT is reversible chain transfer taking place between a CTA and activated macroradical (Kim, Cho, et al, 2020; Thankappan et al, 2020; Zhang et al, 2021). CTAs bear the chemical thiocarbonylthio compounds with the universal structure Z–C(=S)–R that can reversibly react to a propagating radical (addition) to make a transitional radical that can dissociate into supplementary CTAs and radical species.…”
