Synthesis of biologically active and photostable rigid poly(vinyl chloride)

Abstract: N,N-Dimethyl-N'-(6-oxo-2-thioxo-1H-pyrimidine-4-yl)formamidine has been synthesized and introduced as a substituent in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) chains via a chemical reaction. Both the dimethyl derivative and the modified PVC have been characterized via spectroscopic analyses and their biological activities have been evaluated. Both IR and (1) H NMR spectral data confirm the incorporation of the newly prepared bioactive dimethyl pyrimidine derivative in the polymeric chains. The dimethyl pyrimidine derivativ… Show more

“…In both cases, it was found that the PVC antimicrobial efficiency has been enhanced, for example, the addition of the amide derivatives of ethylene glycol‐bis (2‐aminoethylether)‐ N,N,N′,N′ ‐tetraacetic acid (EGTA) as photostabilizers using the casting technique has augmented the biological activities of PVC . Rabie and coworkers have demonstrated that PVC‐pyrimidinethione adducts, prepared by chemical substitution of the PVC chlorine atom with pyrimidinethione derivatives have shown promising antimicrobial activities compared to nonmodified PVC .…”

“…Photostabilizing efficiency of the modified PVC is determined by measuring the changes that occurred in the molecular weights of modified samples after UV irradiation using the gel permeation chromatography, GPC technique. The extent of discoloration of the photodegraded modified PVC is lower than that of the blank one, and that stabilized with the reference UV absorber phenyl salicylate .…”

“…A pyrimidine derivative was covalently incorporated onto PVC backbone by reaction of N,N-dimethyl-N'-(6oxo-2-thioxo-1H-pyrimidine-4-yl)formamidine in THF at 60 °C for 5 h [56] as illustrated in Eq. 7.…”
