Synthesis of amphiphilic alginate derivatives and electrospinning blend nanofibers: a novel hydrophobic drug carrier

Abstract: As a kind of novel hydrophobic drug carrier materials, the drug-loaded nanofibers were successfully fabricated using amphiphilic alginate derivative (AAD) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by electrospinning method. The AAD was synthesized by amide linkage attachment of octylamine onto the carboxylic group of alginate, which was characterized by the means of elemental analysis, FT-IR spectrometer, 1 H NMR spectrometer and fluorescence measurement. Experimental results showed the amidation of alginate was successf… Show more

“…AHAD concentration showed positive effect on tensile strength as indicated by the positive value of its coefficient in the quadratic nonlinear model equation. The far higher value of its coefficient in comparison with other significant factor coefficients is an indication that A has the major significant effect on tensile strength that can be referred to the high elasticity nature of the AHAD as film forming polymer, where the polymer chain flexibility improved due to decreasing carboxyl moieties by hexyl amidation 42Figure 2A shows that the tensile strength was increased from 112.87 to 147.82 g/cm 2 (at least B level) and 101.92 to 137.98 g/cm 2 (at highest B level) when C is hold constant.…”

“…The results indicated that the graing of hydrophobic benzyl groups could destroy the original intramolecular hydrogen bonding of alginate, which could enhance its molecular exibility. [33][34][35] The successful synthesis of BAD was further proved by 1 H NMR. As shown in Fig.…”

“…Nanofibers are ultrafine solid fibers having very small diameters, they are generally defined as nanostructured materials with a diameter under 1000 nm and typically a lengthto-width ratio greater than 50 1,2,3,4 . Nanofibers are of remarkable interests for a multiplicity of applications due to their worthwhile properties such as high surface area and porosity with small pore sizes 5 .…”
