Synthesis of Alpha-Tricalcium Phosphate by Wet Reaction and Evaluation of Mechanical Properties

Abstract: Calcium phosphate cements have bioactivity and osteoconductivity and can be molded and replace portions of bone tissue. The aim of this work was to study the obtainment of α-tricalcium phosphate, the main phase of calcium phosphate cement, by wet reaction from calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid. There are no reports about α-tricalcium phosphate obtained by this method. Two routes of chemical precipitation were evaluated and the use of two calcinations temperatures to obtain the phase of cement. The influence … Show more

“…Previous studies was conducted using different reagents concentration and different calcination temperature [25,26]. Therefore, this work aims to complement previous work in order to consolidate the best methodology to obtain alpha-tricalcium phosphate with high purity by wet precipitation process.…”

“…The α-TCP powder was synthesized by wet chemical reaction method, followed by. 24,25 Briefly, 0.5 M calcium nitrate (Ca(NO 3 ) 2 •4H 2 O) was mixed with 0.5 M phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ). The solution was incubated at 90°C for 24 h, then dried at 120°C.…”

“…The group containing HAp showed larger cavities with irregular limits distributed over a slightly smooth surface. It is possible that these cavities were created due to the release of HAp agglomerates because low values of surface area were found for HAp previously synthesized by the same method 24 . Nanoparticles are prone to agglomeration due to their high surface energy.…”

“…These reagents were purchased from Aldrich Chemical, St Louis, MO, USA. Three CaP were previously synthesized, and they were added in this base resin at 2 wt.%: α-TCP (G α-TCP , 6.03 µm) 22 , OCP (G OCP , 4.94 nm) 23 and HAp (G HAp , 26.7 nm) 24 . A group without CaP was used as control (G Ctrl ), totaling four groups.…”
