Synthesis of 5-Dialkyl(aryl)aminomethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline Dansylates as Selective Fluorescent Sensors for Fe3+

Abstract: A series of 5-dialkyl(aryl)aminomethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline dansylates were synthesized and their fluoroionophoric properties toward representative alkali ions, alkaline earth ions and transition metal ions were investigated. Among the selected ions, Fe 3+ caused considerable quenching of the fluorescence, while Cr 3+ caused quenching to some extent. The absence of any significant fluorescence quenching effects of the other ions examined, especially Fe 2+ , renders these compounds highly useful Fe 3+ -selective … Show more

“…The uninegative bidentate ligand was synthesized by condensation of 5‐(pyridine‐4‐yl)‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole‐2‐thiol31 and 5‐chloromethyl‐8‐hydroxyquinoline hydrochloride. CMQ was prepared and used as starting materials for the synthesis of novel ligand K by slight modification of the method reported in the literature,27 while metal(II) heterochelates of K were synthesized by a subsequently reported method 32…”

“…Among the class of hydroxyquinolines, the chemistry of 8‐hydroxyquinolines has attracted special interest due to their diverse biological properties15, 16 such as antiamebic,17 antiseptic and disinfectant,18, 19 antimalarial,20 antituberculotic,21 antidiuretic,22 anticancer,23, 24 antibacterial and antifungal 25, 26. 5‐Chlromethyl‐8‐quinolinol (CMQ) can be synthesized easily and studied extensively 27. Recently our laboratory reported that CMQ‐clubbed benzotriazole derivatives give enhanced antimicrobial activity 28…”

“…Up to now, various molecular sensors have been successfully developed for the detection of low-level of Fe 3 þ ions [16][17][18][19][20][21][22], however, many of these sensors suffer from some disadvantages including interference problems caused by other transition metal cations such as Cr 3 þ [23][24][25][26] and Cu 2 þ [27] and poor direct applicability in 100% aqueous solution [28,29]. Therefore, there is room for introducing a novel hybrid optical sensor to overcome these drawbacks.…”

“…The 4-acetamidobenzenesulfonylhydrazide [26] and 5-chloromethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline hydrochloride (CMHQ) [4] were prepared and used as starting materials for the synthesis of novel ligand AHQMBSH by slight modification of the method reported in the literature [27] while metal(II) complexes of AHQMBSH were synthesized by a subsequently reported method. [28] The outline of synthesis of AHQMBSH and its M(II) oxinates is shown in Scheme 1.…”
