Synthesis, crystal structures and characterizations of two homochiral coordination polymers based on a chiral reduced Schiff base ligand

Abstract: Two homochiral coordination polymers based on a chiral reduced Schiff base ligand, namely poly[(μ5-4-{[(NR,1S)-(1-carboxylato-2-phenylethyl)amino]methyl}benzoato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C17H15NO4)]n, (1), and poly[(μ5-4-{[(NR,1S)-(1-carboxylato-2-phenylethyl)amino]methyl}benzoato)cobalt(II)], [Co(C17H15NO4)]n, (2), have been obtained by hydrothermal methods and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectros… Show more

“…By the reaction between the amine group of an l-amino acid and an aldehyde group, we introduced the chiral C atom of the l-amino acid to the Schiff base ligand, and then reduced the C N group to a C-N group in order to enhance the stability of the ligands. We have synthesized several reduced Schiff base compounds based on 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (Ying, 2012;Ying & Huang, 2013;Ying et al, 2014). Compounds based on these ligands easily form three-dimensional structures because there are several coordinating atoms in the ligand.…”

“…Specifically, there are 90 Co and 21 Cd complexes matching these criteria, mostly in the form of polymeric compounds. Further examination revealed that only one system featured an l -Phe-based ligand, resulting in a 3D coordination polymer (ID code: QOCLOL) . On the other hand, in terms of the carboxylate group, the coordination scheme observed in compounds 1 and 2 combines two different coordination modes: μ 2 -η 2 :η 0 and μ 2 -η 1 :η 1 (Figure ).…”

“…Substituted methyl benzoate was synthesized according to the literature [34]. Substituted benzoic acid (10 mmol), dissolved in methanol (20 mL) and concentrated sulfuric acid (0.5 mL), was added into the above solution.…”
