Synthesis conditions and characterization of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with oleic acid stabilizer

Abstract: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), part of magnetic nanoparticles, have been widely used in biomedical applications. Biocompatibility and magnetic properties make the SPIONs developed further by a lot of researchers. However, in the synthesis process, SPIONs can run into agglomeration. Oleic acid (OA) is one of the stabilizers to prevent agglomeration. This research aims to optimize the synthesis conditions and characterization of SPIONs with OA as a stabilizer. The synthesis of Superparamagn… Show more

“…hydrothermal, sol-gel), we could not successfully synthesize SPION in nanometer range since the growth in precipitation is uncontrolled. As for the particle size, it does not illustrate the real size of the particle as the particle is covered by the hydroxyl group found in the liquid.26 25 Besides the hydrodynamic diameter, the zeta potential value of the three samples (Figure 3) does not show significant difference. The high negative load of the three samples shows that the particles contain numerous hydroxyl groups on their surface and thus are not easily aggregated; loads between ±30 and 40 mV are categorized as moderately stable.…”

“…The use of NCs in CSs may be hampered by the tendency of NPs to agglomerate, favoring the local accumulation of deposits in the flow channels, which may even lead to their clogging. The effect of the addition of oleic acid, which is one of the stabilizers preventing NPs agglomeration [170] is not well recognized in the case of NCs. In addition, the influence of adding NPs to base coolants on changing their toxicity is unknown.…”

“…In this study, the mentioned NPs were reproduced again in order to evaluate their physicochemical properties in vitro and in vivo in rabbit. Firstly, SPIONs (as diagnostic agents) are synthesized and stabilized by oleic acid (OA) via a co-precipitation method (37)(38)(39). Then, DOX and SPIONs are co-encapsulated into the polymeric PLGA-PEG matrix by a double emulsion method (W1/O/W2 11 ) (40)(41)(42).…”
