Synthesis, characterization, pH‐sensitive swelling and antimicrobial activities of chitosan–graft‐poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel composites for biomedical applications

Abstract: In this paper, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was graft copolymerized onto chitosan (CHI) at different ratios using a radical initiator. The grafted hydrogel composites were then characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform ınfrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Swelling behavior of the hydrogels was investigated at different pH and different times. The antimicrobial activity of the chitosan-graft-HEMA (CHI-HEMA) against gram-negative bacteria and gram-pos… Show more

“…[11,14] Chitosan is a remarkable polysaccharide in various industries as an edible coating due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. [5,16] It is used because of its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, and good coating/film forming properties, acting as a barrier, reducing moisture loss, and improving the respiratory rate of the product. Chitosan also has excellent defense properties against both biotic and abiotic degradation.…”

“…Hydrogels are three-dimension polymers that can keep a large volume of water that does not dissolve at physiological temperatures and pH but swell in the presence of water. [12,13] Hydrogels in an aqueous environment are often similar to extracellular matrix (ECM). [14,15] They absorb a significant amount of water due to several functional groups such as amino, carboxyl, amide, hydroxyl, and sulfonic, which can be modified and tailored according to their function.…”

“…The combination of polymers helped to improve material properties (Gürler & Torğut, 2022). Chitosan, a biological polymer of marine origin, was biocompatible, nontoxic biomolecule, and demonstrated the antimicrobial effects against a broad spectrum of bacteria (Yue et al ., 2020; Torğut et al ., 2022). The combination of gelatin with chitosan exhibited improved physical and water stability properties and antimicrobial activity (Matica et al ., 2019).…”
