Synthesis, characterization, and thermal properties of cyanate esters with azo linkages

Abstract: A series of azo functionalized diols were synthesized through diazotization which involves the reaction of amine with phenol and 2,6-dimethyl phenol. Four different amines have been used to prepare five bisphenols. These bisphenols were converted to their corresponding cyanate esters by treatment with cyanogen bromide (BrCN) in the presence of triethylamine (Et 3 N). The chemical structures of the prepared compounds were characterized with Fourier Transform Infrared, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR spectroscopy, and element… Show more

“…For the diazo coupling, several phenolic compounds can provide good electron-enriched substrates. We can cite for example the nude phenol [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], but also natural compound such as salicylaldehyde [ 25 , 26 , 27 ], vanillin [ 28 , 29 ], or even resorcinol [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…To improve the toughness of CE, many methods, such as blending with thermoplastic resin 6 or thermosetting resin 3 and reinforcing with fibers or fillers, have been developed to modify the CE resin. However, there are some shortcomings, for example, the heat resistance, hardness, and modulus gradually decreased with the increase of filler.…”
