Synthesis, Characterization, and Swelling Behaviors of Salt-Sensitive Maize Bran–Poly(acrylic acid) Superabsorbent Hydrogel

Abstract: A novel composite hydrogel was prepared via UV irradiation copolymerization of acrylic acid and maize bran (MB) in the presence of composite initiator (2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone and ammonium persulfate) and cross-linker (N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide)). Under the optimized conditions, maize bran-poly(acrylic acid) was obtained (2507 g g(-1) in distilled water and 658 g g(-1) in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution). Effects of granularity, salt concentration, and various cations and anions on water absorbency were i… Show more

“…The trend is approximately similar to drying curve. However, the change in the rate of release by drying was not so evident, revealing that the oil‐holding of composite NSM‐ g ‐P(MMA‐ co ‐BA) resin was more sensitive to pressure than temperature . These results manifested that the prepared NSM‐ g ‐P(MMA‐ co ‐BA) resin can be used as a reasonable, excellent and ideal super oil‐absorbent material in the application of cleanup of oil spills.…”

“…[19,26] As shown in IR spectra of Hyd, Hyd/MMT, and Hyd/MMT/NPK, the characteristic absorption bands of the carbonyl groups of AA and AAm as well as N-H amide groups appeared approximately at 1,678, 1,652, and 1,557 cm −1 , respectively, which have overlapped together. The absorption bands at 3,419 cm −1 and 2,926 cm −1 are assigned to the stretching vibration of the hydroxyl group (O-H) and C-H bond, respectively.…”

“…Also, a triplet peak appeared at 1,035 cm −1 , 1,055 cm −1 , and 1,163 cm −1 is related to the -CH-O-CH-stretching vibration. [19] Also O-H, P=O, and P-OH as well as bending mode of HO-P-OH appeared at 2,804 cm −1 , 1,458 cm −1 , 1,152 cm −1 , and 1,060 cm −1 , respectively. Moreover, the overlapped intense and broad peaks found between 3,300 and 3,500 cm −1 indicate the stretching vibration of O-H and N-H groups.…”
