Synthesis, Characterization, and Hydrodesulfurization Activity of New Mesoporous Carbon Supported Transition Metal Sulfide Catalysts

Abstract: The potential of sulfided Mo, Co, and CoMo catalysts supported on two different carbon mesostructures by KAIST-1 and 3 (CMK-1 and 3) for hydrodesulphurization (HDS) of thiophene at specific conditions was explored to investigate the effect of different pore sizes, surface functional groups, metal dispersion, and presulfidation temperature. Co/CMK catalysts were superior to Mo/CMK catalysts on the basis of same metal loading. The synergistic effect was found at Co/Mo ratio of 5/5. Sulfidation on carbon supporte… Show more

“…An extended study, on the surface chemistry of OMC by Darmstadt et al [53] also indicate towards the presence of acidic sites like -COOH, on carbon surface. Further, Hussain and Ihm [54] also confirmed by acid-base titrations that its surface contains several acidic functional groups, like carboxylic, lactonic, and phenolic groups. Apparently, the adsorption process is mainly governed by either acidity of surface or by newly added microporosity in the material.…”

“…1. The pure MCM-41 exhibits strong peaks at 2<theta> = 2.1°due to (1 0 0) reflection lines, three weak signals at 2<theta> = 3.56, 4.08 and 5.4°that correspond to (1 1 0), (2 0 0), and (2 1 0) reflections, indicating the formation of well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous material with space group p6mm [13][14][15]. The X-RD patterns of SZr-MCM41(A-C) also showed typical diffraction peaks at 2<theta> = 2.2, 3.8 and 4.4°, which are slightly higher than the 2<theta> value of pure siliceous MCM-41.…”

“…Mo-Ni catalysts have been extensively studied in the literature as active and stable hydrodesulphurization catalysts [20,21]. In these catalyst formulations, the Mo loading is greater Page 5 of 53 A c c e p t e d M a n u s c r i p t than that of Ni, since Mo is the primary desulphurization metal, while Ni is added as a promoter.…”
