Abstract:In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a catalyst based on bimetallic CuPd nanostructures generated over a magnesium oxide support. Its catalytic activity and reusability have been tested in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction using NaBH4 as the source of hydrogen for the reduction of the nitro-group. The structure, composition and morphology of the catalysts were studied by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The reaction kinetics of reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol has been followed by UV-visible spectrophotometry, and its apparent rate constant has been determined and compared with its monometallic counterparts. All the tested catalysts exhibited remarkable high activity and excellent stability upon reuse for multiple consecutive cycles. We found out that a small loading addition of Pd to Cu catalyst greatly improved the catalytic activity in comparison with the monometallic samples. Our characterization results pointed out a higher metallic dispersion degree as the main explanation for this enhanced performance. CuPd/MgO is highly competitive or outperforms the catalytic activity of other bimetallic systems reported in literature.

Three types of new bead-shaped heterogeneous nanoparticle (NP) catalysts were synthesized by simplified procedures and studied for continuous reduction of crystal violet (CV) dye. The stabilizing agent, viz., 2-acryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (PAC) was functionalized efficiently onto the surface of insoluble poly(styrene)-co-(vinyl benzyl chloride) beads (PS-PVBC) through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) to obtain insoluble bead matrix having intense surface functional groups labelled as PS-PVBC-g-PAC. These PS-PVBC-PAC beads in turn were used as a common matrix for individual immobilization of AgNPs, AuNPs and PdNPs by following the simple chemical reaction/reduction methods to yield the corresponding bead-shaped heterogeneous NP catalysts, viz., PS-PVBC-g-PAC-AgNPs, PS-PVBC-g-PAC-AuNPs and PS-PVBC-g-PAC-PdNPs. These catalysts were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, SEM/EDAX and HRTEM techniques. The catalytic activity of these three types of catalysts were examined through the reduction of CV using NaBH 4 as a reducing agent and it was observed that all these catalysts effectively accelerated the reaction. The superior catalyst, viz., PS-PVBC-g-PAC-AuNPs was again used for detail kinetic studies of the same reduction reaction.

C 20 nanofullerene and its derivatives, as the smallest carbon cages, are amongthe most important compounds in the field of nanoscience. As a result, it is very important to find a procedure to functionalise these precious compounds to exploit their numerous benefits. So, in this study, the process was investigated of adding a functional group to one of the C 20 fullerene derivatives, via its open [5,5] cycloaddition reaction with 4-pyridine nitrile oxide. This showed that the open [5,5] cycloaddition reaction between 4-pyridine nitrile oxide and C 18 NB fullerene takes place with sufficient speed that would need no catalyst. According to the calculations, a highly asynchronous concerted mechanism operates in this reaction. It seems that oxygen-boron interaction causes the mechanism to be asynchronous. All calculations were performed at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory.
