Synthesis, Characterization and Antibacterial Application of Copolymers Based on N,N-Dimethyl Acrylamide and Acrylic Acid

Abstract: Hydrogel copolymers based on N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) and acrylic acid (AAc) were synthesized using a solution polymerization technique with different monomer ratios and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. This paper investigates the thermal stability, physical and chemical properties of the hydrogel copolymer. Testing includes Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis (CHNS). The copolymer composition was d… Show more

“…Copolymers based on DMA monomers are synthesized by various methods and have been used for various biomedical applications, including drug delivery, contact lenses, etc. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Addition, swelling properties of the hydrogel are affected by different structural factors, including crosslink density, charge, the concentration of the ionizable group, hydrophilicity, and degree of ionization [8].…”

“…As reported in literature, p(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) homo-and copolymers do not show retention capacity towards bivalent and trivalent ions (e.g., Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ ) thus demonstrating advantage in nanomedicine over conventional chelating agents in the presence of different metal cations [49]. Moreover, DMAA polymers revealed to have good antibacterial and antiviral properties and non-fouling properties due to the steric hindrance effect of the amide group [50]. The adsorption of other species, i.e., molecules, ions, on the surface of PNPs can significantly impact the electrical surface characteristics, thus affecting the colloidal stability of the formulations.…”

“…Finally, PF-hydrogels were applied in agricultural technology by evaluating their impact on the growth of mustard greens. In addition, DMA-based hydrogels possess antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which is a very important premise for finding their versatile applications [36,37]. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the linear polymers PAM, DMA, and MA were combined in a semi-IPN hydrogel modified with KOH and applied as a phosphorous fertilizer carrier compared to previous conventional hydrogels [26,38].…”
